The road from Hunter's to Amboseli runs through Maasai country, the open savannah between Amboseli and the Kimana Sanctuary, where elephants, giraffes and zebras roam freely. Sightings often begin long before you reach the park. On clear days Kilimanjaro stays in view along the way, at its most striking in the early light when game drives set out.
Along the road you pass manyattas, the homesteads of Maasai families; herders in red shukas walking their cattle and goats; and acacia woodland full of birdlife. Your guide will stop whenever you want a photograph, and can arrange a respectful visit to a Maasai village.
When the day ends, you return to quiet. Away from the busy park gate, evenings at Hunter's belong to the bonfire, the stars and the mountain.
